| At
present, situation in the V.C.O. stone territory there
are about 100 activities involved in quarrying and
working on ornamental stone, distributed in 22 of the
38 townships of the territory and providing employment
for 700 people, while allied industries are estimated
to be for around 600 in number. Annual average turnover
reaches approximately € 57,000,000 with capital
investment in machinery and equipment of over € 77,000,000.
They may be categorized as follows:
• quarrying companies,
which quarry the blocks from the quarries and carry out
perfunctory work at the quarry site itself;
• industrial companies,
which produce semi-finished products, such as slabs from
gangsaw blocks; by its very nature, this sector has large
production volumes but a limited range of finishing types
(flame process, bush hammering, and polishing); companies
specializing in the production of manufactured goods
of any type carried out by design;
• artisan companies, specializing
in the production of smaller manufactured products obtained
via splitting (riven) processes (opus incertum furnishings).

For all intents and purposes, the Val d'Ossola territory
is rather advanced in terms of production technology;
it is not by accident that its quarry basins have been
the object of foreign studies for the sector, especially
by Brazil, Canada and China, despite the fact that
the basins are located at heights of approximately
1,000 metres and reaching as high as 1,400 metres,
and thus also present, as does Val Formazza, some problems
of a practical nature and of access in wintertime.
The distinguishing feature of the V.C.O. area stone
industry lies in the variety of materials produced:
for all types of rock quarried, there is the production
of various types of blocks (from
gangsaws or block-cutters), to the saw-cut stage
(slabs cut, by diamond wire blade, or large-diameter
blade), to the semi-finished products (slabs
with bush hammered, flame process and polished surfaces),
to finished products. The
latter category finds numerous applications in the housing
and industrial construction industry,
for flooring and external and internal furnishings
such as risers, treads, bases, thresholds, sills, window
frames, portals, frames, surfaces, balconies, stone
shelves and columns; or in urban design for
cordons, street paving, benches, fountains, flower
boxes; with interior design objects such as fireplaces,
tables, kitchen and bathroom surfaces; in the funeral
services industry (monuments and chapels).
Another important use to remember is the
current use made of Montorfano white
granite to make grindstones for paper mills and presses. |
